What are the Different Benefits Marijuana Can Have?

Marijuana has been around for quite some time now. Thousands of years to be exact. In that time, the substance has gone from the subject of movies to one of the most popular drugs on the market. With legalization happening around the world, it seems as though cannabis has more benefits to be explored than ever before.

In the U.S. as much as 84% of the public is in favor of cannabis being used for medicinal purposes. Despite this, the substance is still largely considered to be illegal. On the recreational end, as many as 64% of people believe the same. This just goes to show that the future of using cannabis for both purposes remains in the hands of legislation.

Despite Legislation, What Can Cannabis Do?

Over the past few years, we have seen the amount of research on cannabis increase steadily. Due in part to the uptick in research funding, cannabis has been known to be a viable solution to many of the ailments that we face. The two main components of the cannabis plant, CBD and THC, both carry different properties within them. THC, which is there main psychoactive cannabinoid in marijuana, is one of the more researched areas of the plant. In recent years however, the amount of research being done on CBD has increased dramatically.

One of the most well-known things that cannabis can treat is chronic and abnormal pain. A report by the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering and Medicine shows that there is a large amount of evidence supporting the use of cannabis for a variety of aspects of pain. This is one of the most common reasons that people use cannabis for medical purposes.

Cannabis as a Treatment for Muscular Issues

Cannabis also has a lot of research behind it adding to the fact that it can help reduce muscle inflammation and spasms. This could be anything from multiple sclerosis, to general muscle spasms from overexercising or the likes.

Additionally, this could be used for diaphragm spasms such as coughing or heaving. While cannabis is not as widely prescribed as other medicines, the research is increasing to show that it can help with these different issues.

What Else Can Marijuana be Used For?

One of the main complaints that opponents of marijuana use have is that it will reduce lung capacity. While this could be true, there is still no evidence to support that. Unlike tobacco, cannabis does not have any aspect that impairs lung capacity. This is not to say that the vehicle of usage could not impair the lungs, but the substance itself may increase lung capacity.

A recent study showed that those who used cannabis for as many as 20 years, did not see any reduction in their lung capacity. This is yet another way to show that cannabis could not be nearly as harmful as popular culture has shown.

All in all, cannabis remains one of the most understudied substances when we consider its high rate of usage. The hopes are high that as we continue to move toward the near future, the proper research and legislation can continue to be put in place.
